Thinking about moving to Dunwoody? As you explore our vibrant community, you’ll quickly see that Dunwoody is more than just beautiful homes and excellent schools. It’s a place where families grow, and one key part of our community is the amazing Rush Union Soccer program at Brook Run. When we moved here in 2010, Brook Run Park was a huge part of that decision. My son started playing soccer in 2015, and we would drive all the way to Brookhaven to play. In 2018, it was announced that soccer fields would finally be built in Dunwoody, about a mile from our house. No one was more excited for these fields than me. I’ve played organized soccer continuously since age 4. Rush Union Soccer was chosen as the club that would operate play there. They opened in 2020, and we’ve been there 3-4 nights a week since then. I’ve played in both of the adult leagues, and my boys are currently in rec and academy soccer there now. This may sound cliche, but those soccer fields have been life-changing for our family.

Rush Union’s Connection with Dunwoody

Rush Union Soccer isn’t just about playing soccer; it’s a big part of Dunwoody life. This soccer club is deeply connected to our city in many ways. I love seeing my friends and their families there. It has become our favorite hang out spot.

One of the best examples of this relationship is how Rush Union uses local facilities. Brook Run Park, one of the most loved spots in Dunwoody, is where Rush Union players train and practice. This partnership makes the park a lively place with kids playing, coaches teaching, and parents cheering.

But the connection between Rush Union and the City of Dunwoody goes beyond just using fields. They work together to offer a wide range of soccer programs, making sure that every kid in Dunwoody, no matter their skill level, gets a chance to play. Dunwoody built and maintains the fields, and Rush keeps them full most months of the year.

Neil McNab, the Executive Director of Rush Union Soccer, talked about this in an interview on the What’s Up Dunwoody Podcast (Episode 249). He said, “We are grateful for the support that we have received from the Dunwoody community. We are committed to providing a valuable program for our players and their families.”

Academy Soccer: Developing Top Talent

For kids who show serious talent and dedication, Rush Union’s Academy Soccer program is the place to be. This elite program challenges the most skilled players and helps them grow. Academy was the perfect fit for my youngest son. He practices there on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and has 1-2 games most weekends.

The Academy program focuses on improving technical skills and understanding the game better. Players get high-level training from professional coaches, many of whom have experience in college or professional soccer. This gives Academy players top-notch instruction. I’ve gotten to know many of these coaches, and Rush Union takes pride in hiring good people. They want role models for the kids to look up to.

One standout feature of the Academy program is its involvement in high-level competitions and tournaments. We’ve played in 2 pre-season tournaments in the last few weeks, and its one of my favorite times of the year. It’s a time commitment, but worth every minute. These events are exciting for the players and the Rush Union Spring and Fall Cup puts Dunwoody on the map in the Georgia soccer world. College scouts often attend these tournaments, opening doors for young athletes to chase their dreams.

What really sets the Academy program apart is its focus on the overall development of players. As Neil McNab explained, “We believe that soccer is a great way to teach children important life lessons, such as teamwork, sportsmanship, and perseverance.” This approach ensures that Academy players grow as athletes and as individuals.

Recreational Soccer: Fun for Everyone

While the Academy program is for the most competitive players, Rush Union’s heart lies in its Recreational Soccer program. This program is open to all kids, no matter their skill level, and it’s all about getting the whole community involved.

The Recreational program focuses on fun, participation, and learning the basics of soccer. It’s where many Dunwoody kids get their first taste of organized sports in a supportive, low-pressure setting.

A unique feature of the Recreational program is that parents volunteer as coaches. This not only keeps the program affordable but also builds a strong sense of community. Parents get involved in their kids’ athletic development, which strengthens family and community bonds. I’ve been coaching there since 2020, and it has been an amazing experience. It has brought me so much closer to my boys and all of their friends. Plus, we make new friends every season. There’s nothing more rewarding than coaching youth sports.

Rush Union also offers various camps and after-school programs within the Recreational program, making sure kids can play soccer year-round.

But the fun isn’t just for the kids. Rush Union also has adult leagues, so soccer fans of all ages can keep playing. The Over-40 Men’s League offers a competitive outlet for older players, while the Coed Open League provides a fun, social environment for adults of all skill levels. These leagues promote fitness and community by bringing people together to play the game they love. I’ve played in both of these leagues and they are very well run. Monday nights at Over-40 league is my favorite night of the week. I’ve gotten to know so many like-minded dads from throughout the community. Our What’s Up Dunwoody team has played since the inaugural season in 2021, and we’ve won 8 back-to-back championships.

Neil McNab highlighted inclusivity in the podcast interview: “We want to create a welcoming environment where everyone feels like they belong. We are committed to providing opportunities for players of all backgrounds and ages to participate in the program.”

Player Development Pathways: The Road to Success

One of Rush Union Soccer’s biggest strengths is its structured approach to developing players. The club offers clear pathways for kids to grow from their first kicks to potential college recruitment.

At the core of this pathway is the transition from recreational to academy levels. Players who show interest and skill can move up to more competitive teams, with the academy being the highest level within Rush Union.

To support this growth, Rush Union provides specialized training programs. For example, the Speed, Agility, and Quickness (SAQ) sessions help players develop the physical tools needed to excel.

Rush Union also offers goalkeeper-specific training, making sure players in this key position get the focused attention they need.

The club supports players’ development across various age groups and skill levels, helping them find the right level of challenge at each stage of their soccer journey.

It’s More Than Just Soccer

As you think about moving to Dunwoody, Rush Union Soccer is more than just a place for your kids to play. It’s a community institution that adds a lot to life in our city.

From the youngest players in U4 and U5 to high school athletes dreaming of college scholarships, and even adults looking to stay active, Rush Union provides a supportive, challenging, and fun environment for everyone. The program’s commitment to inclusivity, skill development, and character building aligns perfectly with the values that make Dunwoody such a great place to live.

Neil McNab summed it up best: “We want to create a place where everyone feels like they belong.” That feeling extends beyond the soccer field to all of Dunwoody.

So, as you explore everything Dunwoody has to offer, think about how Rush Union Soccer could make a difference in your family’s life. It’s not just about the games or the skills learned—it’s about being part of a community that values growth, inclusivity, and the joy of sport.
