Dunwoody Eyecare with ATL Eyecare's Dr. Tommy and Mary Anne
In this episode of the What’s Up Dunwoody podcast, host Matt Weber talks with Dr. Tommy Koepke and Mary Anne Langman of ATL Eyecare about opening a family-run eye clinic in the Dunwoody where they grew up. Learn how their hyper-local, relationship-first approach is changing how locals view eyecare.
Why Open ATL Eyecare in Dunwoody?
Dr. Tommy Koepke could've started a practice anywhere. North Carolina, San Antonio, Florida. But every time he left Dunwoody, he found himself comparing it to home. The small-town feel. The family-first vibe. The no-skyscraper policy. So when the time came to start ATL Eyecare, coming home just made sense.
Tommy and his sister-in-law, Mary Anne Langman, are neighbors. Literally. They live just a few doors down from each other—close enough to share routines and support each other outside the office. Their workflows are in sync. And their shared love for their hometown is baked into every frame, lens, and prescription they offer.
Dunwoody isn’t just where they live. It’s where they want to serve. As a Wesleyan School alum and Wake Forest grad, Tommy’s path always led back to this zip code. After building experience at a top-tier ophthalmology clinic in Dallas and running a private practice in Atlanta, he launched ATL Eyecare with one goal: to bring quality-first, personal eyecare to the town that raised him.
What's It Like Opening a Family Business Together?
Surprisingly smooth. Mary Anne admits it's probably her sister (Tommy's wife Laura) who has the tougher job navigating the family-business triangle. But the operation works because they each stay in their lanes.
Tommy handles the optometry side like a boss. Diagnosing, customizing lenses, and bringing major OCD energy to every pair of glasses. Every exam is done by him personally, which is rare these days. There’s no bouncing between techs and assistants—just one-on-one, high-skill care.
Mary Anne brings her healthcare IT background to the business side. She makes sure the patient experience is seamless from check-in to billing. She's also become the unofficial social media coordinator, with some backup from Laura. Efficiency and warmth—that’s her superpower combo.
Laura, the Operations Manager, blends her Georgia Tech know-how with genuine hospitality to keep the office flowing like a well-oiled machine.
They’re all about personal care, modern tech, and never sending patients home with a meh pair of glasses. If something’s off, Tommy’s tweaking it until it’s just right.
What Makes ATL Eyecare Different?
ATL Eyecare offers the kind of service you can’t get at a big box store. Host Matt Weber knows that firsthand. He thought his degenerative eye disease (Keratoconus) made him a no-go for glasses. But Tommy got him seeing clearly for the first time in years.
That kind of precision comes from their top-tier tech. Think OCT, visual field testing, and custom lens fitting—all handled in-house. ATL Eyecare doesn’t just stock trendy frames. They engineer comfort and clarity for every unique eye.
Their Williamsburg Shopping Center spot (a.k.a. the Chick-fil-A / E. 48th Street Market) is hyper-local, super convenient, and designed to feel like home. ATL Eyecare is flipping the script on what an eye doctor visit should feel like.
They also manage serious stuff: glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, dry eye syndrome, and post-op care for LASIK and cataracts. From toddlers to seniors, they’ve got every phase of life covered.
Is Eyecare Really That Important for Kids?
Absolutely. Tommy recommends eye exams starting in first grade—even if everything seems fine. Some conditions, like lazy eye, can be super subtle. And if they’re not caught early, the brain will just start ignoring the weaker eye.
Good news: the days of awkward pirate patches are (mostly) over. With today’s technology, treatment is way less noticeable and way more effective.
For non-verbal or younger kids, Tommy uses techniques that are both gentle and precise. No scary equipment. Just smart diagnostics and calm bedside manner. That peace of mind matters for parents—and the early intervention can change a child’s whole learning path.
What Services Does ATL Eyecare Offer?
Everything you’d want from a full-spectrum eye clinic, minus the cold, clinical vibes:
Comprehensive Eye Exams: Regular checkups to protect and improve vision
Full-Service Optical: Frames, lenses, fittings—all custom, all in-house
Medical Eye Care: Allergies, infections, floaters, uveitis, and more
Advanced Diagnostics: OCT imaging, visual field testing, retinal scans
Surgical Co-Management: Pre- and post-op care for LASIK, PRK, ICL, cataracts
Corneal Disease: Including keratoconus, RCE, and Fuchs' dystrophy
Dry Eye Clinic: Diagnosis and modern treatment options
Glaucoma & Retinopathy: Detection, tracking, and treatment planning
Pediatric Care: Age-appropriate exams, even for non-verbal kids
How's Business Been Since Opening Day?
ATL Eyecare opened August 18, and things have been moving fast. Tommy’s rediscovered his love for the craft, especially customizing lenses down to the micrometer. Mary Anne’s been flexing her ops muscles, fine-tuning patient workflows and marketing efforts across every medium—even old-school mailers.
Feedback? People are loving it. Clearer vision, better service, and way less of that sterile, chain-store feeling. As Mary Anne put it, people don’t always realize how fatigued their eyes feel until they finally see clearly. That’s the mission: give Dunwoody a better view, one neighbor at a time.
